Automated protein expression - Piccolo

Automated protein expression - Piccolo
Piccolo™ is a new, fully automated system for the automated protein expresion and the rapid optimisation of recombinant protein production in microbial or insect cells.
The system has been designed in conjunction with a consortium of 3 leading global pharmaceutical companies and offers the flexibility to vary and control a wide range of protein culture parameters independently and conduct experiments in parallel.

Piccolo automates:

  • Automated protein expression
  • Culture inoculation/infection
  • Lysis
  • Growth/induction
  • Affinity purification
Piccolo offers

  • Significant reduction in protein production timelines (from months to days)
  • Improved run-to-run consistency and site-to-site process transfer
  • Provision of improved data for experimental strategy design
  • Focus on maintaining protein quality
Piccolo enables consistent and reliable determination of the best construct, host strain, culture conditions and induction/infection dynamics for individual target proteins. It provides the most comprehensive system for automated protein expression.
Applications include

  • Structural biology
  • Assay development
  • Protein engineering
Piccolo is currently being used at 3 leading pharmaceutical companies including Merck and GSK
GSK chose Piccolo to support their high throughput parallel expression activities.
Piccolo is designed to support to vary multiple expression parameters rapidly in parallel to enable automated protein expression to be achieved in days rather than months, These systems are a key tool in the expression tool box to enhance availability of protein early in the discovery cycle to enable determination of structures and improve effectiveness of lead optimisation
